Scotland

The earliest hereditary surnames in Scotland were of English or French origin. Our ancestral surname during the reign of King David I (1124-53) was Venator. Then when most landed families had surnames by about 1300 and were known as Huntar until around the 16th-c. Robert the 20th Laird of Hunterston started using the Hunter spelling of the name.
